What the numbers show
Turn a phone into a measurement tool
phyphox uses the sensors already built into an Android phone to support practical science experiments. It suits students, teachers, curious learners and anyone who wants to collect real measurements instead of working only from textbook examples. Depending on the device, it can work with motion, magnetic fields, sound, light, pressure, proximity and location.
Ready-made experiments and raw data
The app includes prepared experiments that can be started directly, with results calculated from the phone’s sensor readings. Examples can explore acceleration, rotation, magnetic fields, sound and local gravitational effects. Measurements can be reviewed alongside the analysis, then exported for further work in common formats such as CSV, tab-separated values and Excel.
- Use the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, microphone, light sensor, barometer, proximity sensor or GPS when available.
- View readings and calculated results while an experiment is running.
- Export both measured data and processed results for reports or additional analysis.
Useful for classrooms and custom projects
phyphox also supports remote control through a web browser on a computer connected to the same network. This can make demonstrations easier to manage while the phone gathers the data. More advanced users can create custom experiments by combining sensor inputs, analysis steps and display elements, including operations such as frequency analysis and signal comparison.
Established academic project
Developed by RWTH Aachen University, phyphox is listed in the Education category and has passed 1,000,000+ installs. Its 4.84 rating from 8,068 ratings suggests sustained use among people looking for a hands-on way to study physics with everyday hardware. Sensor availability varies by phone, so the experiments you can run depend on the device.
